Thus, CDMA is basically a spread spectrum, which means that data is sent in small packets via different discreet frequencies that are available within the range at any point in time. This technology operates on both, the 800 MHz as well as 1900 MHz bands.
The basic advantage of CDMA is that the call rates are a lot cheaper than GSM. Also, the call quality is better due to the technologies used in both the cases, comparatively. GSM, on the other hand, has a lot more to offer in terms of advantages. First of all, there are numerous handsets and service providers to choose from, unlike CDMA, that has only a couple of options in terms of the latter, and a handful in terms of the former. Next, one is not bound to a particular service, and can change it any time in case the facilities are not good, calls are expensive, and so on. This kind of freedom can't be exercised in case of CDMA, where the handset and connection come together in a contract. Further, the power consumption on the part of the handset is lesser in case of GSM, compared to CDMA. On the connectivity part as well, GSM scores high, since the phone will work in any part of the world, unlike CDMA.
